Russ,
I've been considering your plight a couple of days now. I sympathize
somewhat with what you say but I take some issue as well:

After my happy experience with Ubuntu 10.10, I thought I would never
want to move from Ubuntu 10.10. I did not want to get into Unity.
Then support for 10.10 ended. OK I get the message about LTS.
So have you looked at changing your /etc/apt/sources.list from the
active to the old-release repos so you may continue to get packages for
"retired" releases?
I moved backwards - to 10.04. Slower than 10.10. OK let's try 11.04.
I've been using 10.04 since its release. I don't find it particularly
slow. At least to this point, I am the slow part of the chain...
After doing a clean install of 11.04 and changing to Ubuntu Classic GUI,
still slow.
Never really ran 11.04. Curious as to how you quantify "slow." Won't
argue that Ubuntu bloats things.
OK, 12.04. Absolutely no way to use Gnome that I have found.
Others have responded here.
Lord, I miss Fedora, with its option of pre-selecting apps at
installation time.
I personally cannot stand Fedora. You are welcome to it.
I read about MATE and saw comments about problems re: mixing Ubuntu and
Mint repos. My repo maintenance is bad enough now.
What??? Jack Coats posted a Howto-Geek link that clearly shows an
Ubuntu specific repo. Works for me.
LinuxMint? I installed it and spent about 2 minutes wondering "Where is
everything - er - anything?"
Okay, it is different. Depending on which level of LinuxMint you got
into. I think it looks too much like Fedora ;)
I am beginning to appreciate the "stability" of the Windows and OSX GUIs.
And that is my beef at the moment - the different desktop manager, ahem,
groups are trying too hard to look like OS/X. And Unity is in prep for
tablet computing.
Forget CLI. I am getting close to using pebbles in leather pouches for
accounting and management systems.
Backup and e-mail are going to be a bear.
Please read the man pages for tar and mutt...
