Hmmm, now I looked at my system, I think I was wrong.
It is gnome-session. Just follow the guide someone linked in this thread.

Okay I admit to being lazy and not looking up what the differences are
between gnome-shell and gnome-session-fallback.  I haven't converted my
primary systems to 12.04 precise yet so I appreciate this ongoing
discussion.  I have loaded mate-desktop a couple of times and like what
I see.

We may continue this discussion Tuesday evening -- or not  :)  Full
schedule...
