Hmmm, now I looked at my system, I think I was wrong. It is gnome-session. Just follow the guide someone linked in this thread.

I haven't converted my primary systems to 12.04 precise yet so I appreciate this ongoing discussion. I have loaded mate-desktop a couple of times and like what I see.
