Thanks for the replies. I have copied off the 'good data' to a different drive, and started an automated backup of that machine data including the external drives.
I have thought of removing the 'bad' device from the case, but have hesitated. Partly because I don't want to mess up wifes 'stuff'. I need to get over it. I was trying to remember SpinRight by Gibson Research (grc.com). I guessed they might have the right tools or links to good ones. I didn't know about Recuva. I'll check into it. --- Update --- I purchased a copy of SpinRight - not cheap but I used it years ago and the new version can help save my sanity now on, and I can use it in the future. So I have run it on a couple of machines. Oddly enough, it couldn't/wouldn't access the USB drive we are having problems with. Given that, even though I don't trust M$ software, I ran chkdsk on it from XP. And a miracle occurred and the files showed up again (at least the ones that were known lost). ... Hurray!!! So currently I have a backup running, to copy to a different external drive, and backup to our local backup server. Thanks for all the great input! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "NLUG" group.
