Well, sure, but you have to understand some of the context of the
time.  4.4 BSD was not yet out, so none of the BSD derivatives yet
existed, nor had AT&T sued Berkeley yet.  If you had a PC at that
time, you ran DOS and Windows 3.1 (or OS/2, if you wanted something
with protected memory).  I don't think BSD even ran on 386 computers
at that time.  So if you wanted a Unix environment, you either got
yourself an account with a university that had such a machine or you
ran Minix, which was really just intended as a teaching tool, not a
serious environment.  GNU might have existed, but the Hurd kernel was
far from finished.

Into that scenario, where the only people running Unix are running it
on minicomputers, your application base is extremely small.  So unless
you liked Unix for the sake of running Unix, you probably weren't very
interested in that.  After all, it's the applications, not the
operating system, which drives adoption.

When you really think about the environment into which it was
launched, it is really amazing that it took off and grew the way it
did.
