Actually, probably the most popular unix of the time was something SCO (the
original SCO) was selling that ran on PC hardware.  It was used in a lot of
vertical market apps, some of which I was familiar with.  It was
particularly popular with the Unibase derivatives.

GNU very much existed, and was kind of a userland looking for a kernel at
the time.  Actually, most GNU stuff sucked, honestly, and it was a bit of a
joke as to why anyone would replace the working userland in whatever Unix
they were using with the GNU stuff.  When Linux came along, GNU was just
waiting.

Hard to believe it's been 20 years.
