Ham radio digital packet (basically, AX.25) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packet_radio
It used to be very prominent then Internet came along. :) Still used a lot for a fairly resilient over the air messaging system called 'Winlink' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winlink) and for a GPS location system called 'APRS' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Packet_Reporting_System) which is a lot like ACARS for mobile ham radio operators (mostly for coordinating emergency response activities). If you can tune VHF (like with a police scanner), you can hear area traffic on 144.390 in the Middle Tennessee region. What you will hear on that frequency is 1200 baud packet transmissions. There's a few web sites that collects and provides others a way to monitor the APRS stations being tracked by the system and collected centrally. http://aprs.fi/ and http://www.openaprs.net/ are a couple I like to use.
