If you happen to be interested in satellite tracking or tracking the ADS-B signals from planes one of the better antennas for such things (somewhat simple to construct, cheap and at the ADS-B frequencies quite small) is the Lindenblad antenna: http://www.amsat.org/amsat/articles/w6shp/lindy.html That would have some gain toward the horizon, but has enough coverage immediately above the antenna to work well. For short wave a long wire or something better would work well. There are adapter cables also available to change to different coax connectors.
