We've never had any major issues with 1and1, and they've been very
responsive and actually helpful when we have, usually responding within
an hour. That was when we were on the shared hosting service, which to
my understanding is(was?) fairly uncommon. We had to move to the
dedicated hosting since we were butting against the PHP memory cap
(30MB, if I remember correctly) they have on their shared platform. That
wasn't too bad, just had to tweak a few things with a couple of our
vendors, and we probably use too many plugins.
It sounds like your site is an aggregation of links, more or less, so
yeah, the front end host shouldn't matter much. I highly recommend 1and1
and WordPress as a platform. 1and1 will "turn on" WordPress for you, or
you can build it all yourself. Either way, it's highly customizable, and
the next person can administer it easily should you get a better offer
somewhere else.

if it matters at all.

We use 1and1.com <http://1and1.com> for our site, and we only pay

running.
Our site is a WordPress site with a customized child theme that I
developed. We use a plug-in called Wordfence that is quite robust
in its abilities to block intrusion attempts like bad
username/passwords, country IP blocking, and other fun stuff. I'm
fairly certain there are businesses out there that can migrate it
for you, so it can be done. I built our site from the base theme
and added the functionality we need, and if you'd like to take a
look it's here: http://www.gmpl.org

Hello NLUG,
Last year our Joomla website was hacked and blacklisted while
hosted on hostgator, no help from hostgator in resolving anything
as it was a non-managed dedicated server.
One NLUGger gave us several suggestions for other hosts; we went
with a managed dedicated server at (public cloud host) Rackspace
for $800+ per month, which includes a firewall; it got us off the
blacklist.
I was recently warned by a WordPress aficionado / IT consultant
that Joomla websites are being hacked left and right and I would
like to know of any suggestions from the NLUG group:
1) Who likes what website platform and can a Joomla site be
migrated over? and
2) Does anyone have confidence in other managed dedicated server
hosts for less money?
Thank you kindly
M
