I did it for fun, hoped it would help the resume too. It does sometimes keep costs down too, avoid spinning up a droplet/linode/instance for a proof of concept. Also I make customized Live CD's and find no point churning bandwidth to do that in the cloud.
I'm still getting my foot in the door with IT, but that is a lot of my background. I do a little freelance and am looking for a permanent position at the moment.
