Tommy makes good points too.
Starting with Mint, it's Ubuntu based so you should get all or most of the 
third party developer support. Many programs only have a Ubuntu version if 
they have a Linux version at all. People also rave about how easy it is to 
use.
I also prefer VMware and would only add that Workstation has a free version 
called VMware Player. I use Workstation and vSphere myself but I'm really 
into virtualization. 
Some people go with VirtualBox over Workstation because VirtualBox is free. 
If that's a factor for you, I'd recommend staying with VMware and using 
Player.
