Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking (and really, why would setting CPPFLAGS/LDFLAGS be unacceptable for packaging distros? That's the way nearly every other autoconf package works). And I don't think it will break the debian packaging, because now the argument to --with-cyrus-sasl is silently ignored. So I think it should still work fine. If it doesn't, let me know and I'll gladly fix it.
