Man, Ralph, you are NOT GONNA LET THAT GO, are you? :-)

My personal feeling is that it was FREAKING MD5.  It should have been
removed a decade ago.  File it under "critical security update", not
"incompatible API change".  Or maybe we're officially adopting Semantic
Versioning starting at 1.8 :-)
