Hi to everyone : this is my first message. I hope my English is not too bad, because I’m french.
I must say I love MoneyWell, which changed a lot my conception of budgets, but I have to come here to say that I’m disappointed by the new icons. It is not a question of taste or feel, but something related to ergonomics : the previous icons had a lot of contrast, alone and one with the other. I mean that the eye could find them easily, without watching the screen or searching for them. With the new icons, it is really difficult to distinguish one from the other, because they are too much the same in colors and graphics. Precisely, an icon has to be as easy to read as a road sign. If they are charged with symbols and drawings, we cannot find at a glance the essential information. The preceding icons had this quality, and the color allowed the eye to go directly to the good icon. One example: the big «+» for a new operation was easy to see. In the new icon, it is a very little «+» that we see third, after the card and the pen. So that: 1) it is difficult to find it immediately, but if you look at the majority of the Mac applications, there is a very simple «+» that we find instantaneously for most current operations like this 2) I still have to search for it, although I already saw it, and although I’m used to this software for months 3) the images used to compare well and money, and the preceding signs have been transformed in this new version, so that there is a gap between the two version, and we have to learn again the icons 4) the green of the + is not far from the grey of all these icons, so that we barely see it 5) I disagree about the new symbolism, which is not clear for me, as I explain it below : - for this new operation, writing a letter or on a card (?) is not associated for me to a new bank operation… (but what is this blank card?) - scales (Reconciling) is linked to the balance of the budget, not to the reconcile operation, which is simply checking operations with the bank report (to check : here is the idea! the check mark was really perfect) - for «Import», we import operations, not money flows. - for «Download», a safe is related to an old-fashioned way of keeping money at home, not to the modern download of virtualized operations… A good icon should be obvious, not original... Well, I’m really sorry to criticize so much these new icons, but they seem to be an obstacle to the easy use of this software : if an old user is lost, what about new users? In fact, simple and transparent icons, with significant and bright colors would make it really better again, and I’m sure that it would be more commercial, in a good meaning here. I hope you will take some time to consider what I tried to explain, and that it may bring something useful to MoneyWell.
