You "could" use a symbolic link to your remote storage to prevent this in the future. Drag the receipts from the link location then if/when the real destination changes you simply rebuild the link using the same name. What this won't correct is data loss.
What seems odd to me is that you would be able to store all the images in the local MW doc, but not the raw receipt image.
