Blair,

Having the files external would not affect MoneyWell performance and  
that's why you store binary large objects (BLOBs) outside of a  
database. iTunes keeps all the files separate and in a folder tree on  
the disk using just an XML file for the database. I'm not sure about  
FileMaker but Access is never a good example for any database design.  
It's a very dangerous database system (I learned the hard way by  
thinking I could use it for one of my Windows apps in a past life).
