I use the historic spending information on the Spending Plan panel to set up my plan. If you select a month on the graph, you see total transactions for each bucket for that month. This may be helpful but I think switching between the different historic methods is more helpful. When using the bucket (envelope) system, you should not have any monthly filters active because it will hide what you have left to spend in each bucket.
