I wouldn't see it in terms of a "threat". I'd rather think of it as spreading the async word further into the JVM ecosystem. That's a good thing for everyone. Vert.x is broader than node but clearly node is a source of inspiration. Vert.x would probably not exist if it wasn't for node. I see Vert.x competing more with the likes of Akka/Play than node, but if Vert.x gets some users from the node community because it fulfils their needs better, that's not a bad thing either.
