Indeed. This is an issue with fs.stat on Windows. If the only effect is that exists() is a little weird, then it's not very high priority.
The issue is probably that we call _makeLong on windows paths, which resolves them. Otherwise, paths longer than 256 chars cause issues. (I haven't investigated it though, so it might be a different thing entirely.) This may eventually be a WONTFIX, since the only effect seems to be this path.exists weirdness. To test for directory-ness, use stat directly.
