Wow. This thread got pretty ridiculous, didn't it? I'm really disappointed.

People who put on conferences take on an absurd amount of
responsibility and put in an inhuman amount of work, and often end up
losing a considerable amount of money in the process. If they do make
a profit, it tends to get invested in the next years' conference. No
one's getting rich running conferences in the Node community. They
deserve your respect, even if you disagree with their decisions or
priorities. We are lucky.

NodeConf was not free, it's true. It was paid for in part by the
attendees, and to a large degree by the sponsors. Those who did pay
for it generally seemed quite pleased with their purchase. A lot of
lasting value was provided FOR FREE to everyone in the node community
who didn't attend. If you have a problem with NodeConf, email Mikeal
Rogers off-list to discuss it. Same goes for EmpireJS, LXJS, Node
Dublin, et al. Take your problems off-list.

This list is not for expressing disapproval. Especially disapproval
of content that you are getting for free, provided by someone else at
personal expense. Same goes for conferences, open source libraries,
etc.

So, here's a new rule for this list: You have to be nice. You are not
allowed to make rude comments about anyone or anything. Even if
someone specifically asks, "Hey, do you like express (or coffeescript
or promises or whatever)?" and if you happen to NOT like that thing,
you must couch your disapproval in the most respectful language
possible, acknowledging what might be its strong points, and you may
ONLY do so if explicitly asked. Or better yet, just don't say
anything.

The next person to break this rule gets permanently banned without
warning. It will be swift, and not open for discussion.

I am sorry to get all kindergarten about this, but really: If you
don't have something nice to say, say it somewhere else (or just
don't).

If you wanna complain, do it productively, like a grownup, in private,
with the person who you actually have a problem with. If you want to
complain like a child, then that's what Hacker News is for. This list
is different. The Node community is different.

I don't care about losing a few people who spew bad energy. I care
about losing all the newcomers who see a bad-energy-geiser, and decide
that Ruby or Python are more their speed.

If you think I'm talking about you, you're probably right. Don't say
anything to defend or apologize. I don't care. Just stop spewing bad
vibes, and don't let it happen again.

If you think I'm not talking about you, that's fine. Make sure you
never fall into this category.

Thanks.
