Yes, newer compiler versions are ideal. I bet he's compiling on RHEL/
CentOS 5.x. I do this regularly on a bunch of CentOS 5 machines with
the same compiler version without any issues though.

@Mario: I'm assuming you did `make install` also? Does `which node`
say something like '/nfs/ccs/local/bin/node' ?
