Someone more knowledgeable can correct me if I'm wrong, but to me it looks like the docs (https://npmjs.org/doc/json.html#version) only require that the version string be *parseable* by semver, not that they actually follow semantic versioning. I think I've seen modules that follow node's even/odd versioning paradigm instead of semver, though I can't remember which.
