I run into that once!
There is a CLI command to enable symlinks in VirtualBox. I will post it later

There are a bunch of options involving config tweaks, setting up network
file sharing, or some semi-automatic invocation of rsync...
...but you might find it easiest to just keep your image assets working
directory separate from your app and just copy them over as needed.
