It only does that for me if I use the simple search (^H) and click "replace
all". I don't know why. Searching for ^ and replacing with * works if I keep
clicking Replace. The simple search only works within one line and can't remove
the start of line, so you don't need it in the replacement string.
An advanced search without regexp for ^M and replacing with ^M* will do it for
all but the first line and might add an extra at the end.
This stuff is a bit of a mess in Notepad++.

If you have a blank file opened and type anything, the tab's icon should change
color (to red) to show that it has been modified. If you try to save, then
cancel
out, the icon changes back to it's normal color (blue) and will not change back
to red if you make any more modifications. The same thing happens if you open
a file, modify it, then go to Save As and cancel out. I'm using Notepad++ v3.9.

Fortunately, this *is* my desired behavior! I hate other editors just because

Hey man, I just got my MRU blown away.
I got this error about a buffer overrun 666 that said something about not enough
memory to complete a task. I checked my task manager, and I still had 900 meg
left of my 2 gig of RAM. I also have a huge amount of disk space left for any
caching that might be necessary.
When NP++ closed, my MRU was gone.
Why did this happen?
