To compare two text files, try Winmerge. "WinMerge is an Open Source visual
text file differencing and merging tool for Win32 platforms. "

ExamDiff is a good little program for that.

Is there a quick way to edit a number of files and replace a string of text
(filename.html) with the actual filename of the file being edited?

In my Internet Explorer, when I select "Show Page Source", Notepad++ opens.
On (stupid) IBM Websphere Portal Server V6, URLs are generated as beautiful as:
https://xxxxxxxx.xxx.xxx.xx.xx/wps/myportal/!ut/p/c1/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0

Apart from the fact that I can fully understand, why Notepad++ refuses to handle
such dirt, I would greatly appreciate it, if I could use Notepad++ again in
a future release to view my page source.
(A buffer overrun is reported by MSVC++ Runtime Library)
Very many thanks for bringing Notepad++ to the world !

Why not use the find/replace function? Ctrl-R or TextFX -> TextFX Quick
-> Find/Replace

That was my thought - but how can I have the filename automatically entered?
I'm not sure of the correct code.

I'm not quite sure I know what you're asking, but I'll try to help anyway...
Just place "filename.html" (without the quotes) into the top box and the actual
file name in the second box. Then click on the Find button and click the
Repl&FAgain
button until all the filename.html's are replaced.
I hope this helps!

I appreciate your help - but maybe I need to clarify.
I have 100 files. Within each file are three instances of the text
'filename.html'.
I want to replace 'filename.html' with the actual name of the file the
'filename.html' is in.
Example: File 1 of 100, fixme.html, contains three instances of the text
'filename.html'. I want to replace 'filename.html' with 'fixme.html'. File
2 of 100, fixmetoo.html, contains three instances of the text 'filename.html'.
I want to replace 'filename.html' with 'fixmetoo.html'. Is it possible to do
a batch find and replace?

Okay, thanks for the clarification... I'm not quite sure how to do that--to
be honest, I haven't been using this program for very long. I will try a few
things and get back to you if I figure anything out. The only thing I can think
of is that there may be a variable for the file name that could be put into
the replace section...

I also thought of making a macro where you could use Find (ctrl+F) to go to
the "filename.html" which selects it. Then you could right click on the tab
of the file with which you are working, select to copy the filename to clipboard
and paste it in place of the selected "filename.html." Unfortunately, the macro
recording only seems to pick up the paste step, and is therefore useless. If
you could find a way to record the other steps, you could use a macro to do it.
On a side note, it might just be easier to do it the manual, old-fashioned way
and go through each document and replace them. It may be tedious, but by the
time you find out a way to automate it, you may have already been able to finish
it. Just a thought... ;)

Looks like somebody is working on it. This guy Martijn seems to be doing
something
with it. But not sure if he's been successful at it...
