(How) can I fix this for the SQL language I use?
Can I create a User Defined Language deducted from the currently implemented
SQL language and throw away the # recognition and treatment?

It's OK I got it.

I just went to Settings>Styler Configurator and then in 'Language' selected
Dos Style and then configured colours so that I get normal text display rather
than ASCii Art Display with the black background

:)

It seems to convert to whatever setting you have put in "Preferences - MISC
- Replace by space"

free text editor).

A plugin sounds look a good idea. I think the best solution is as you say other
programs: "attempt to decide the indentation scheme of the file and mimic it
whenever you hit tab". This wouldn't be hard to implement, for each line in
a file count the number of lines that start with a space and the number that
start with a tab. If the space count is higher assume spaces otherwise assume
tabs. This accounts for files that may have mixed spacings taking the one that
occurs most frequently.

I will look into how to write plugins for notepad++, if its not too much trouble
I'll do it.

you can define you own languages, etc
If you look in C:\Program Files\NotepadPlusPlus or whereever it is you have
notepad++ installed you will see a number of XML files. I belive the ones you
want are stylers and langs.

from what i can see langs.xml can be edited to add new languages
and stylers can be edited to colour the tags, etc

If you don't have xml knowledge, i'm sure you won't find it hard to pick up
how to add languages, etc, just be looking at the way it is layed out.

Also, you might wish to make an API file for all the tags because then you can
use the auto complete function aswell
