It's all up to you what you would like to do with it.
At least it has more capabilities than standard Notepad.

Hi,

Just make npp your default Notepad, see the download page for details:
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/download.php

Maybe there is some registry trickery through which you can do this only for
editing batch files from the explorer but I don't know it ;-)

Another option is to use the explorer plugin (which is wonderful)

Best
Idris

Hi all.

How can I set up keyword's as UPPERCASE?
I programming PL/SQL codes and I used to write keywords uppercase.
It will be nice to have, while I write keyword as lowercase and Notepad++
transform
this automaticaly UPPERCASE.
Is it possible setup this somewhere in Notepad++?
OR - it will be possible add this feaure into the Notepad++ ???
What are you thinking about this functionality?

Nufacik.

It sounds like your main question is what are the features of Notepad++?

There are too many to list individually, so let me just talk about a few that
make it indispensable for me as a programmer and a writer. Since you mentioned
Notepad, I'll work from the point of view that Notepad++ is like Notepad with
extra features.

1) Syntax highlighting. For a programmer, this is very useful. It color-codes
different parts of the document to make it easy to read.

2) Auto-indent. A small yet very useful feature that eliminates the #1
annoyance
with using Notepad as a source code editor. If you have Spaces or Tabs at the
beginning of a line, then when you hit ENTER at the end of that line it
automatically
adds the same number of spaces or tabs to the next line.

3) Tabbed interface. With a few exceptions, most people like to have all of
their currently opened documents in a single window. Use tabs to move between
them.

4) Macros. Record your frequently-used series of keystrokes and menu items
so that you can play them back later with a single keystroke. A related feature
is customizable shortcut keys.

5) Plugins. The built-in ones add a lot of useful tools (As a writer, I find
TextFX Word Count to be particularly useful), plus there are several more that
you can download.

6) It can be set up to be completely portable. I keep a copy on a USB drive
with my favorite settings so that I can work with it on any computer without
having to install it.

It doesn't automatically remove your old Notepad, but since I've started using
Notepad++, I rarely open Notepad any more. Since there are no drawbacks to
Notepad++ as compared to Notepad, I figure I might as well use the same editor
for everything.

I use it for programming in Delphi and Python, and even use it as a
word-processor
for writing books. (I write in plain text with minimal HTML markup, then when
I'm done I use advanced replace to add paragraph tags to each line and a macro
to stick an HTML header and footer on)

In short, you can do everything with Notepad++ that you can with Notepad, and
usually better. Just try it and I'm sure you'll like it.

Disclaimer: I know I sound like an advertisement, but I'm in no way affiliated
with the Notepad++ project except as a satisfied customer.

Of course, it is not so smart to start different threads about the same subject.
You have to keep checking each of them for answers and you may be tricking
repliers
into saying the same thing a number of times. I guess this also isn't very
productive
for you.

You might as well have replied to this first message instead of starting two
new threads. How would you like all repliers to start new threads also?

Hi

I made (with AutoIt) a Notepad++ Replacer with a GUI for replacing
MS-Notepad.exe with the N++ Launcher.

Here is a screen NPP-GUI_eng.jpg:
http://s3.directupload.net/file/d/1257/o8qhbanz_jpg.htm
Here you can download the file Notepad-Replacer_eng.exe:
http://uploaded.to/?id=tcsct4
Here you can download the scriptfile *.au3:
http://uploaded.to/?id=dm075j

AutoIt Script home page http://www.autoitscript.com/

I run it under WinXP x32 prof. with success, but under Vista should work,
but no garantie + testet! Give it a try!

How it goes:
- it extracts to temp: n++_icon, n++_logo.gif, n++launcher and setup.exe
  and run the setup.exe
- it requires Adminrights! in WinXP + Vista
- if a open session of the MS-Notepad.exe excist, will close in 20 sec.
- it makes a backup from the MS-Notepad.exe in 'Windir/Notepad-backup'
- it looks where the MS-Notepad.exe stored:
....-WindowsDir\servicepackfiles\i386\notepad.exe
....-WindowsDir\source\WinXP\i386\notepad.exe
....-WindowsDir\notepad.exe
....-SystemDir\dllcache\notepad.exe
....-SystemDir\notepad.exe
....-HomeDrive\i386\notepad.exe
....-HomeDrive\i386\notepad.ex_
- it temporary disables Protection for MS-Notepad.exe and
replace it with the Notepad++ Launcher in given dir.
- it writes a logfile Notepad.log, where the script starts.

You can translate the GUI if you want. Post it here again,
i will made than the installer.
Download the scriptfile *.au3 above url, or translate this:

One of the biggest advantages of Notepad++ over Notepad has nothing to do wih
it being a source code editor. Simply editing is so much more convenient than
in Notepad. For instance, moving lines can be done by pressing a few keys. Also
there are much more extensive search and replace functions. This alone is a
reason why you MUST install and use Notepad++ and never look back at the old
Windows text typing tool.

I can't speak for Don (the developer of Notepad++) but from reading other posts
on the forum, it sounds like it's not going to happen. There's far too much
that would have to be rewritten.

I'd like to see it on Linux as well, but for now, it looks like it's
impossible.

(Let me add a friendly little reminder to search the forums before asking a
question. This one has been asked over and over again.)
