It's worse!!!
Try simply selecting a word with the mouse. Smart highlighting will try to
highlight
them *WHILE YOU ARE SELECTING THEM*
How do I turn that damn option off!!!

Turning it off can be done through Settings->Preferences->Misc and untick Smart
Highlighting.
Maybe a nice middleground *might* be to simply allow a maximum of 500 ms to
do the smart highlighting (and else simply don't). Or do it in a low-priority
thread in the background. Or...

Somehow notepad++ insists on not using the colours I have defined in the Styler
Configurator. This problem occurs for the Find mark, smart highlighting and
incremental highlighting-styles (I guess there are a couple more). Instead of
using the colours I have defined, a washed-out version of the colour is
displayed.
So, when I have defined bright red as the background colour, then a
light-pinkish
blackground is shown (the foreground colour is actually ignored with the Find
Mark style).
Why is this? Is this the enhanced visual effect of the mark all feature? Am
I doing something wrong here? Can I turn this option off? I just want the
program
to do what I tell it to ;-)

Look like this file is locked by another process.
Did you try to open it from another application?

I'm bumping the a) problem again.
It can be easily fixed just by applying the mentioned GetLongPathName() on the
window title, please fix it.

It's not just one file, it's files that didn't originate in Notepad++. If I
can't open it in Notepad++ I can open it in Dreamweaver or Notepad with
no problem.

Could you check if there are any differences in the Properties dialog of each
of the files (Notepad++ files and non-Notepad++ files).
This like Compressed options, marked for archiving, read-only etc.
If it doesn't seem to matter, could you see if a clean copy of Notepad++ helps?
Download the latest binary package (zip file, not installer), and run Notepad++
from there (all plugins disabled if possible).

The washed out colors are a result of Scintilla drawing the markings
transparent,
which unfortunately isn't configurable. Because the background is (default)
white, it'll look washed out.
The forground color options is a leftover from older versions, and is being
ignored, since only the background can be set.

Hmm... That really is too bad. The marker-feature was quite powerful in the
previous version. Now, with the markers just poorly visible, the effectivity
of the marking-functionality has drastically fallen ;-(
Is there any way to set the level of transparency is this Scintilla-thing?
