Open the windows registry editor and go here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\

-Right click on App Paths and create a new key called firefox.exe
-Now click on the newly created firefox.exe key (folder)
-Right click on the content area of the key and create a new string called Path
-Double click the path key to edit it and paste the full path of the firefox
executable, most likely will be c:\program files\mozilla firefox\firefox.exe

Open npp press f2, it should work now.

The bug is that Notepad opens a utf-8 file as ANSI when there is no utf-8
character
in it. This forces me to change the file-format after ever opening of such a
file.
Maybe from a programers point of view this is not a bug - from a developers
point of view it is. (With developer I mean someone developing with notepad,
not for.)

Do you think there will be done something about this in near future?

It's not a bug for me.
However, the behaviour you suggested may be more convenient.

> Do you think there will be done something about this in near future?

Yes, you will be able to enforce opened ansi document as utf8 w/o BOM in
v5.1.4.
To do so, just set new document encoding as "UTF-8 without BOM" via preferences
dialog.

Don

In the preferences dialog I can just set the format for a new file, not for
a file I open. So this will be implemented later?

Somehow I can't get rid of the feeling that it worked before I installed the
last update ...

Ah, and thanks a lot for your helpful answers, that's very kind of you.

Hi guys !

I'm a webdesigner and many times, while i'm doing my CSS code, i need to
write a line for debuging the style sheet. To do this, i write "border: 1px
solid red;".

Does anyone know how can i create a shortcut to write this line to me ?

Thanks !

My bad guys, the PATH string has nothing to do with this, just make sure the
(Default) string has the location of the executable.

Open the windows registry editor and go here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\

-Right click on App Paths and create a new key called firefox.exe
-Now click on the newly created firefox.exe key (folder)
-Double click the default string to edit it and paste the full path of the
firefox
executable, most likely will be c:\program files\mozilla firefox\firefox.exe

Open npp press f2, it should work now.

Perhaps I have misunderstood something, but unless there is a BOM or an UTF-8
character, isn't the file ANSI? That's one of the reasons for using a BOM, isn't
it?

If I am mistaken, please say so, but it does not sound to me like this is a
bug. How can Notepad++ know that a file is UTF-8 if there is no UTF-8 character
nor a BOM to tell it?

You are right, in case there is a BOM or utf-8 character, no problem.
About the BOM: A lot of programs especially in web-design don't work well with
this BOM. The most often occuring error is that it is read as an character in
php-files and this character is send with all the header-information in front
of it. So you are not able to send specific header-information anymore or use
template-systems like smarty.
Because of this I am not able to use the BOM to indicate my files as utf-8
files.

If I have a file now where there is no utf-8 character I have to be very
careful,
not to write or copy a utf-8 character into this file without changing the
coding
to utf-8 before doing this. Otherwise it will destroy this characters.
Obviously doing this for every file (normally a project contains many, many
files) is tremendously time-consuming.

Especially nowadays where it is more and more common to use just utf-8 as
encoding
to ensure correct display in different languages, I think an option for opening
files as utf-8 encoding as standard (even if there is no BOM or utf-8 character
in it) would be appropriate.

To your question:
> How can Notepad++ know that a file is UTF-8 if there is no UTF-8
> character nor a BOM to tell it?
>
Same goes in the other way: How can Notepad++ know that it is NOT an utf-8
file?
I agree that it might be a bit to strong to decide completely for utf-8 and
open every file in this encoding. But there is also no reason to completely
decide for ANSI. So I think a fair way would be to let the developer select
with a checkbox how he would like Notepad++ to handle it.

If I understand you correctly, this is actually a feature that you would like.
You would like an option so that the user may select that Notepad++
automatically
converts every ANSI file to UTF-8 when the file is opened.

Personally, I think this would cause many more problems than it would solve.
However, as long as this behavior is not the default, and must be explicitly
activated by the user, I would have no objection to it.
