I'm a relative newcomer to NPP and, although I've adapted NPP as my default
text processor, I find the status of regular expression editing confusing. So
my question is, What's the skinny on regular expressions?

What does NPP have in the way of regular expressions, and what is in them. It's
clear that they do not meet 'standards' for regular expressions, not that I'm
expert.

I'm happy to summarise the status of REs but I need access to information.

I've used REs in both normal search-and-replace mode (Ctrl/H) and advanced
search-and-replace mode (Ctrl/R). Neither are the full quid. The documentation
for normal (or what some people call simple) search-and-replace
(http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/regExpList.php ) is incomplete. For
example, it doesn't say what can be used in replacement strings. (Not much
from what I've seen, unless I'm not doing it right.)

As for advanced search-and-replace, I haven't been able to find any
documentation.

I've skimmed the messages in Help and Open Discussion and I would summarise
them as follows:

  * messages about the deficiencies in REs
  * pleas for replacement of Scintilla for REs by something else
  * requests and solutions for things that do not appear possible in REs but
should be
  * reasons why somethings are not possible in REs in NPP

Pointers to information releveant to REs in NPP will be much appreciated

In normal search-and-replace mode (Ctrl/H), choose Regular Expression search
mode, enter '\x00' in the Find What? box (no single quotes), and nothing in
the Replace With box. Do a Find Next and test the replacement with Replace.

As Allen Zhu says, it may not make much sense to do this, but the method above
should work.

Allen, a Nul character is an explicit code (hex 00) not a general term
for non-printing characters.

I want to use some non-printing characters in my replacement search-and-replace
string. Using regular expressions, I've tried using \x00 in my replacement
string
but I get literally \ followed by x followed zero followed by zero.

Any suggestions for achieving what I want?

I was having frequent crashes with notepad++ 5.1.3 so I looked t to see if
there was a later version and I found 5.2. I uninstall the old version and
installed the new version. The first time I ran it crashed also. With this
version, yet asked if I wanted to save a log, which I did and can send it if
it would help.

Hello,

Where can i contact the developer of the Notepad++ FTP Plugin. I have a problem
with the cache files during long worktimes. When i save a local edited file
it tells me that it is uploading the files, and uploaded succesfully. But when
i look with an ftp client afterwards, it shows me still the old file without
changes. I suppose it has something to do with the cache files and comparisation
with the files on the ftp. Maybe there should come some raw-overwrite option
for this plugin..

Notepad++ dosent remember last open directory after closing it. I have setup
"Remember last operation directory" and it still open the notepad directory
everytime I click the Open button.

Thats what happens actually. FTP plugin tells the server to upload to that file,
but I have no idea where it goes wrong and why. Are you sure it is uploading
to the correct folder and not somewhere else where you can't find it,

Hi Fool4UAnyway.

I did manage to find one tedious solution ... I was hoping for something more
elegant like what you are trying to show me!
Maybe you can simplify the below?

Assume I have:

TEXT1
/*
... 1 ...
*/
TEXT2
TEXT3 /*
              ... 3 ...
           */

1. I first replace all newlines with a 'dummy' word (replacing expression \r\n
with 'dummy'):

TEXT1dummy/*dummy...1...dummy*/dummyTEXT2dummyTEXT3 /*dummy...3...dummy*/dummy

2. Then replace all '*/' with '*/' + newline (using expression, replacing */
with */\r\n

TEXT1dummy/*dummy...1...dummy*/
dummyTEXT2dummyTEXT3 /*dummy...3...dummy*/
dummy

3. Now I've got EACH '/* ... */' to display in a single row.

4. I can now use REGEX to remove '/* ... */' for they no longer include
newlines:
[ ]*/\*.**/
I added [ ]* to account for leading spaces

TEXT1dummy
dummyTEXT2dummyTEXT3
dummy

5. Put the newlines back in (replace dummy with \r\n)
TEXT1

TEXT2

TEXT3

6. Get rid of blank lines by looking for \r\n\r\n

It's convoluted, it's tedious, but it works!

Notepad 5.2.0.0

Got this error while trying to use the "ctrl F" key combo with a URL on on the
clipboard and trying to search inside an HTML document.

"God Damn Exception : 666"

Then got some lovely messages about attempting to back up but should probably
kiss my work good bye :) and notepad shutdowns.

I was able to reproduce it one more time after the initial time, but can no
longer replicate it.

Anyway, was an interesting error message is all.... thought you might like to
reword it on the off chance some Joe blogs public see's it and gets upset ;)

Daniel
