[~kturner], I believe Mike is talking about the [HDFS Federation built into
Hadoop|http://hadoop.apache.org/docs/r2.2.0/hadoop-project-dist/hadoop-hdfs/Federation.html]
Under that, I believe only a single NameNode would be responsible for the part
of the namespace that defines the instance id and version information.
