Hibernate thing can be simplified then. I'll give that a try.
On _users I see it with a few replications running. And I see replication
sources and _users shard appear in the ets table. Then disappear and pop right
back up.
I am guessing those are opened for reading but couch_db_updater times out
because there are no updates done to that shard? Is that plausible explanation.
Is it worth trying to factor in last open time in is_idle?
