Yup, I think that's the confusion. the term "JSON Document" isn't well-defined 
I think, it's a colloquial usage (though I've not seen it to mean anything 
except "JSON Object" myself). Consider that "foo", 12.0, 4, true are all valid 
JSON, but CouchDB will reject them all as CouchDB Documents.

Joan is a long-term developer/committer on the CouchDB project and a member of 
the CouchDB Project Management Committee and is well-versed in how CouchDB 
works and is designed to work.
