   Ah! The issue is this short-circuit equality test: 
https://github.com/apache/couchdb/blob/a36e7308ab4a2cf/src/fabric/src/fabric_view.erl#L301
   
   The normal `couch_ejson_compare` sorting function preserves the arrival 
order because it only does the less-than check, but the short-circuit one will 
reverse them and put the newest-arriving element that compares equal first. 
Mystery solved.
