Also, unlike with 3.0, 2.4 would use the same packages, so... it's not possible to have both 2.3 and 2.4 in the classpath (except for OSGi). So backward compatibility breaking can be painful for some users. (Also, we probably don't want to support 2.3.x and a 2.4.x line, and less backward compatibility breaking helps there too, like, politically.) So, yeah, keeping BC is possible as far as I know, and it would make the process much easier, as far as I see.
