Just to help clarify scope and expectations: Can you confirm whether this still reproduces on the latest master / latest-dev build, or only on 4.x / 5.0? Do maintainers see this as something that should be properly supported in SQL Lab (i.e., correct rendering of MAP values with special characters), or is it an acknowledged limitation that should be documented more clearly? Is this behavior specific to Athena, or has it been observed with other engines that support MAP / complex types (e.g., Presto/Trino)? The JSON cast workaround suggests the data itself is intact and the issue may be in Superset’s result parsing / serialization layer rather than the query execution.
