The guard is intentional for TypeScript 6.0 forward-compatibility: in TS
6.0, `Map.prototype.keys().next().value` is typed as `K | undefined` (the
iterator protocol was tightened), so the guard is needed to avoid a type error
even though it is unreachable at runtime today. Closing.
