Hi! I am one of the teammates of @Psyduck100 in the study group at UTSC,
and we’re planning to work on this issue together. Here are a few additional
notes on what we have in mind. We’d welcome any feedback or further discussion!

A few additional notes on scope and interaction:

**1. Sum first, with room for simple statistical operations**

The initial implementation will support **Sum only**, combining the selected
series at each matching x-axis value. A small set of other simple statistic
operations, such as mean, minimum, maximum, median, or standard deviation,
could be considered later, subject to community feedback. These would not be
part of the initial scope.

Any additional operations would work across the selected series’ returned
values at each x-axis point. The goal is **quick, lightweight** exploration;
complex statistical calculations are outside this feature’s scope.

   **2. Simple and responsive interaction**

Following the original request, we aim to let users select a few series and
view a combined result with just a few clicks—ideally **2–3 clicks for a simple
case**—with an intuitive way to undo the combination. The calculations should
remain lightweight, with a goal of no perceptible delay for typical chart
sizes. We would validate responsiveness during implementation.

   **3. Frontend-only, temporary results**

The operation will use data already loaded into the chart, without
additional backend requests or changes to SQL, datasets, or metric definitions.
Combined results will be temporary and will not be saved to the chart or
dashboard.

Users can remove the combined result through **Ungroup**. We also propose
resetting temporary combinations when the underlying query data or series
definitions change.
