Back in SunOS .... 2.4? they added this idea of 'personalities' to the OS.  
Based upon how you set your various paths, you'd get different semantics on the 
shell.  It's kind of a neat idea, if confusing.  For the record, xpg4 is 
*technically*  POSIX.2, POSIX.2a, SUS, SUSv2, & XPG4 to be all official about 
it.  See standards(5).  xpg6, a similar directory, is POSIX.1-2001 & SUSv3.
