The main reason I implemented this is that, as an emacs user, I kept intuitively trying to tag messages in this way, and it wouldn't work. I actually was thinking of combining regions and marking (let's call it that to keep from getting confused with notmuch tags) -- i.e., have region selection in search mode also mark messages. And then there could also be a message-by-message way if you wanted to mark disjoint messages.
