when performing you don't need it in a patch, but while creating the
patch it is nice to have a number storage with a visible state to test
the inputs and a way to manipulate it directly if needed. I agree, and
i guess most people will, that numberboxes aren't necessarily the best
visual feedback while performing, but that's not the point here, is
it?

I really think one has to differentiate the needs while performing
from those while patching... i guess that is also the point of using
the kernel and the gui separately, especially when we are talking
about input devices from hardware faders to telepathy, as those could
communicate with the kernel via osc and a the graphical user interface
would degenerate to some kind of visual feedback that only receives
data from the kernel...
