I get all that you are saying. Still it's noteworthy that 3121 has
been a half hearted attempt by BOTH Prince and Universal. Especially
coming on the heels of Prince's & Sony's well thought out planned
promotion of Musicology--starting with the Grammy's, then maximizing
the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction, and the tour.
Can't help but wonder if Sony is snickering now, looking at how 3121's
promotion has stalled (according to reports Sony WANTED him back for
3121). He was off to a good start, with the videos, the SNL
performance, and even the Brit performance... then POOF! He's gone.
With the exception of a Hit and Run tour for Tamar to sing old soul
classics. They didn't even perform "Beautiful Loved and Blessed" at
those shows--the single that was out!
Seems like he starts out with all these plans (remember the 18 singles
planned for Emancipation?) and then they just fizzle.
As far as his back catalogue, yes he will always get some change for
that... but it is nowhere NEAR what it could be if he had more
exposure and more people wanted to use his songs. The licensing fees
for radio play and other "performances" of his catalogue are a
pittance compared to what they would be for use in movies, television,
or commercials. But who's requesting it? And would he even grant
that?
Think of what using "Black Sweat" on a Verizon vcast phone commercial
would have done for the record? ('Cuz it sure enough blew up the
Black Eyed Peas and Sean Paul songs)
I still say something is amiss.

Prince? Universal? Lex Luthor?! Or Even worst me!! It just astonishes me
Prince has been really really quiet about it all.

Prince doesn't make music for the masses anymore, and we all need to
admit this. I made referenece to Prince fans being like Star Trek
fans, and the more I look at it, it's pretty accurate. Prince fans
are fanattical and when we're all in a sold out arena the world
belongs tro us, but then we walk out and TI is playing on the
radio. this ain't 1986. We are Prince's fan base. We'll buy
whatever he puts out, no matter what. But the world isn't like that
about him any more. Which is fine. He's made a lot of money, and
relelased a lot of popular work. Universal will profit from his
catalog of songs for a long time. But to try and make a pop record
when the pop records of the day are fluff...it's an uphill battle
that I don't see the value in fighting. He can still sell out a venue
in 24 hours. He can make more money selling direct than going
through a label. I said this before this album came out, and I'll say
it again. He doesn't need these majors. Why bother?
He ended up not doing the American Idol gig. He never really
promoted the record on his own website, not even a myspace campaign.
All there was was "Purple Ticket". Which is awesome. But not PRINCE
level awesome. I think we would have all gone to another
"celebration" considering how much we all enjoyed the Musicology
tour. And we'd have appreciated being exposed to some new artists,
including Tamar.
He left the marketing and promotion of this record to a label that
couldn't hold on to Erykah Badu. I don't understand why he keeps
doing these deals.

The 'net is rife with rumors of course... Here's a sampling:
-P & Universal are feuding for sundry reasons (add yours here)
-P is upset at the record's pre-release leak
-Universal is upset that Prince chose to promote Tamar instead of his
own record, and has not done (m)any performances of the album to
promote it
-P's health: the whole hip replacement rumor
-P has domestic issues... "ain't no fury... only the woman knows"
-P has taken time off to assemble and rehearse a band
-P is back in studio reworking Tamar's album, which has been postponed
indefinitely
-P called to the carpet by the JW's for the risque lyrics on 3121, his
Hollywood partying lifestyle, and other moral issues
-P is bored with a record he's been sitting on for over a year
-3121 sucks and P knows it (that one was for you KERED :P )
-P is purposely remaining mysterious before "blowing up the spot" again
What do you think/know? is happening?
