Hi Bob I have been using a dremmel freehand for the slots if your hand is
steady enough when equiped with a 1" (25mm) grinding wheel from the model shop
it proves very successful- line the slots and glue them in. I made a press for
the slot liners with a two tonne press from Axminster you will have to be
creative with your moulds for the single double and tripple liners from thin
flat brass @ 16thou aprox. I welded up some moulds with an old arc welder using
mild steel for the mould material, it takes minutes to create a liner now e
whereas before it took ages of fiddle and faff trying to get two lots of
90deg'. I never bothered to ream out the bore as modern drlls don't rifle the
barrel like they used to but get the best you can afford and make a long scarf
then pre-weld to silver solder together. Even if it does rifle the barrel then
this isn't neccesarily a bad thing as all modern trombones use this to desired
effect just look down the inner slide to see. Something to do with the air
swirling round inside the instrument and projectiong the sound foreward. keep
pushing the bit gently and very slowly foreward removing frequently with the
use of oil to lubricate and cool the bit. A hot bit will cut bigger dia'. Got
lots of spanish reed here. Beat the crap out of the brass bar starting at 1/4"
x 1/8" file it to shape then silver solder the key end on, file up then polish
up using a felt wheel brown soap then a loose mop with blue soap abrasive all
from local too suppliea and Axminster. A pillar drill will do it as they are LH
thread onto a mandrell. Can be aggressive so go steady. It needn't cost a lot
of cash to builkd DIY but it will take that bit longer and the results are
great. ( all the gear no idea) When finnished you can be proud of what you've
done so far. Keep going.-- Bob Salter wrote :

   Francis:

I had considered your method making some kind of hardwood vice
from something incredibly hard like bubinga and mounting it like a
toolpost on the crosslide. Is your jig along those lines or something
   more grand in metal.?

   Richard:-

I have long considered using a dremel in this way. However I lack the
invention gene ( I can copy anything but not invent). I never could
figure out how to secure my dremel so it didnt move. Could you throw a
   little light please.

I hesitate to ask but would there be any interest in a dedicated nsp
forum where one could search topics for old answers and things would be
permanently recorded for all? I have one good to go, just waiting for
members. However I dont wish to offend anyone or alienate anyone by
doing so. If you are interested, please let me know and Ill send you
   the url.

   Thank you for the help

   Bob
