Hello Bob; nice to see some "nitty gritty" on-line, I made a mistake about LH
thread should have said self tightening mop on the mandrell. Springs are easy,
use the same material for key making ie 1/4" X 1/8" brass and cut down the
middle making two @ 1/8" square'ish ( saw blade will take some away) Beat it
till it's flat and looks right thickness. This work hardens the brass to make a
spring. For stronger springs use thicker starting material for example the long
chanter keys where the fulcrum is higher up. This is fixed in place with a
small "slug" rivet of 1mm brass rod again from the model shop or a model making
supplier to do with model trains or similar. There is one in Hull who does
great prices by post. Fix the rivet by filing till it's just too long, then
tapping top and btm till the spring is tight then polish up to make the rivet
invisible. Trial and error will do. All this work can be done cold, I've even
made a chanter using stainless steel from knives an' forks, all beaten cold.
Don't advise it though as it's heavy on 1mm drill bits. That ended up in the
bin too as no help around and not PC literate then but good practice none the
less. I found that if I used the dremmel and grinding wheel to cut the beaten
spring to shape, the heat took the spring out of the metal so best not be lazy
and get the file out instead. It needs to fit in the finnished slot and look
nice under the key but mostly function well without binding. a drop of oil
works wonders afterwards too. Neats foot works for me. Saddlers merchants or
pet shops where they sell horsey stuff will flog you some. Malcolm.-- Bob

I had considered your method making some kind of hardwood vice
from something incredibly hard like bubinga and mounting it like a
toolpost on the crosslide. Is your jig along those lines or something
   more grand in metal.?

   Richard:-

I have long considered using a dremel in this way. However I lack the
invention gene ( I can copy anything but not invent). I never could
figure out how to secure my dremel so it didnt move. Could you throw a
   little light please.

I hesitate to ask but would there be any interest in a dedicated nsp
forum where one could search topics for old answers and things would be
permanently recorded for all? I have one good to go, just waiting for
members. However I dont wish to offend anyone or alienate anyone by
doing so. If you are interested, please let me know and Ill send you
   the url.

   Thank you for the help

   Bob
