Hey folks,
I have seen many posts elsewhere about folks having problems with Windows
2000 DHCP not giving IPs out to computers that use to get their DHCP
settings elsewhere. Usually someone was upgrading to an NT2000 network from
WindowsNT or Novell.
I ran into the same problem, but here is what I did to quickly resolve it.
After Windows 2000 DHCP was setup and activated I went to each computer and
removed any unneeded protocols, set the appropriate domain information and
rebooted. I found that DHCP kept retaining the old settings (from previous
system). If you tried to renew it it would simply report back with an
error.
I tried simply removing TCPIP, rebooting, and reinstalling TCPIP... but this
did not help.
What I did was simply go into the registry and delete the related DHCP key
information. It is in different places depending on Windows 95, Windows 98,
and 2000. Sorry... I didn't right down where they were. Just do a search
for DHCP until you find the locations that store all the settings.
I then rebooted and everything worked like a champ. There may be some other
way of doing this, but this is what worked. I have just seen many folks ask
this question in other forums and lists, but did not get an answer.
