You have a scenario I have not tested... :)
I've done it the other way -- laptop running any version of Windows in
workgroup or domain, connecting to another domain. I haven't tested
domain system connecting to workgroup system.
Okay, try this: At the command prompt on the laptop, type the
following prior to accessing any resources on the desktop...
NET USE \\Prime fred /User:Prime\Alister
If that doesn't work, you may have an issue with Name Resolution. You
might want to drop an LMHOSTS file on the Windows 2000 box with an
entry for PRIME.
Thinking about it now, it really seems like a Name Resolution issue...
