Pinging requires Hostname (Hosts/DNS) Resolution.

Logging on requires NetBIOS (LMHOSTS/WINS) resolution.

It is possible to have the former working with the latter broken.

Then the NET USE should work.  Your laptop is used to being in a
domain, and consulting a domain controller for authentication.  If you
force it to use the desktop, you should be fine.
