I can't answer for Laercio, but we have our Exchange 5.5 behind our Firewall
and we have a relay host in the DMZ. This way we still control what can get
to the relay host (just SMTP), and the relay host is allowed to transfer to
Exchange. This way we have our exchange server, which has other services,
completely isolated behind the firewall with private IP's. Several Security
consultants preferred this method as well.. as opposed to opening a hole to
the inside of your private network through the firewall.
I don't know about anyone else, but I feel a little better security wise.
Could be a false sense, but it has worked great for us. Our Relay host has
a limiter on it and if someone were to bomb our relay host it would not
effect our primary server.
