Brian,
Thanks for this info. I'll need to keep looking for other apps. I
have looked at UpdateExpert by St Bernard Software. Does anyone know of
other software that will do this?

I tried to send this to the list, but it was rejected.
There is not a way (as of yet) to package hotfixes and updates within MSI
files. I tried it and it will not let you create the package. Hopefully MS
is working on a way to do this.
You can try chaining the hotfixes with hotfix.exe and put it into your login
script. The only problem with this is trying to keep track of what machine
has them and what machine doesn't. I haven't figured out an efficient way
to do this yet. I'm sure there is a way to do it with WSH or VBScript.

I disagree. In order to use msi's, everytime Microsoft comes
out
with a hotfix or update I would have to create a sysdiff file for each
OS
and then assign them by GPO's. With SMS or 3rd party utilities, they do
all
the work of getting the updates and distributing them. I use msi's for
applications and service pack, but I think they are not useful for
patches
and hotfixes. I don't know how much staff you have, but I have way to
much
on my plate to spend all that time manually creating msi's. It sure
would
be nice if Microsoft made all patches and updates available as msi's...
What I was asking for is if people have used SMS or 3rd party
solutions and what their experiences are. When we were hit with nimda,
we
had to go around to workstations and apply IIS patches, even though we
have
been instructing users on how to go to Microsoft's update site and
download
updates for themselves.

Umm..that's what they're there for. To distribute stuff. If that's too
much
work for you...I dunno. Find a new line of work? I don't mean to be
err...mean....but how much easier can it get?

Subject: Update Distribution
Hello,
I'm looking for ways to distribute the Microsoft Updates to my
clients without using SMS. I've thought of repackaging the hotfixes and
updates as .msi files and using intellimirror, but that seems like a lot
of
work on my end. Any ideas? How are others keeping their clients and
servers patched?
