I'm kinda in the same boat as you. Not only for updates & patches but
application deployment. I think SMS is too top-heavy and our network is
slow. We're short staffed as many businesses are so we're evaluating
products to help too. Check out Winnt Mag's article:
http://www.winntmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=21516 - Application &
Deployment, August 2001.

Some of these are too expensive but some are more reasonable. Altiris
(http://www.altiris.com/) is just one of the companies mention.

Also, we use ScriptLogic for helping with hotfixes & updates. BTW,
Scriptlogic does more than just map drives as it can roll-out some updates,
patches etc. Check out www.scriptlogic.com

Subject: Update Distribution

Hello,
I'm looking for ways to distribute the Microsoft Updates to my
clients without using SMS. I've thought of repackaging the hotfixes and
updates as .msi files and using intellimirror, but that seems like a lot of
work on my end. Any ideas? How are others keeping their clients and
servers patched?
