You can push the client to Win2k or NT machines from the console. You
can also push the install to Netware servers. Netware servers must be
installed as NAV servers, not as NAV clients. You can not push the
client to any Win9x machines. Win9x must either be installed manually or
from a login script. Clients can be managed by any NAV server, Win2k, NT
or Netware. I only install the NAV server on machines that will service
clients. All of the other Win2k or NT servers (such as SQL or email
servers) are installed as NAV clients. If there is a local server, the
clients on the same subnet should be serviced from that local server.
If you have a remote location with no server, the clients should either be
serviced over the fastest wan link or else be unmanaged and get their
updates directly from Symantec.

We originally started installing laptop users to be managed from their home
office, but we found that we had some users who were so mobile that they
were not getting updated often enough. Now we install all laptops as
unmanaged and set them up for a daily Live Update and at least a weekly
scan. I prefer to have them do a daily scan. Most machines will do a
full scan in less than 30 minutes.

Thanks - DR

Continuing on this topic a bit. Do you all install the server version on
all
servers or just on a couple of servers and then push the client on servers
that won't administer NAV. For instance. You have 20 servers in one
location. Do you install the server version on all 20 servers? Or do you
just install the server version on 1 server as the primary and install the
client software on the rest of the servers? Is there anything different for
server version besides the AMS?

Wait a minute I am getting mixed messages here. If there is no AV client
then it will work okay?

Remote client in NAVCE push works just fine when there is NO AV scanner
installed on the client... That's how I deployed it.

As I understand it, the remote client push only works if a version of NAV
is
running on the client. It will override it and play nice. I have found that
some of my guinea pigs are failing because they are running Mcafee. Could
this be your prob?

I don't know. I have pushed the installs to the clients from the console
and
the crap never works that way. Won't see the computer in the console. Can't
even discover it by IP address. Only way I can get it to work it to install
it from the CD and then run the discovery. Contacted Symantec about it and
they said that it should work, but no matter what I do it doesn't work
unless I run the install from the CD. The push to servers works like a
charm
though.

This is the order that I read that you should install:

a = disk 1
b = disk 2

1a. ssc
2b. nav snap in
3b. ssc add ons
4a. live admin util
5a. quarantine console
6a. central quarantine locally

Well, that explains part of it. Under the server Group, All Tasks, there
is
only View AMS log and Configure AMS log?!?!? Looks like I missed
something.
At least that gives me a place to start hunting. Thanks.

Anyone have an idea what I did wrong?

Andrew,
Right click the server group, All Tasks, Norton Antivirus, Client Realtime
Protection Options..., File System tab.

Thank you for your polite response <not!>

I have installed the clients, they have found the server, and when I open
up
the console, I even see the clients listed. But I can't figure out how to
set exclusions (don't scan this file or directory) or how to set what files
are scanned! The only thing I can do I configure the Live Update and that
doesn't help me much! Where are the other options? Isn't that the point of
centralized management? Being able to set the options from a central
location? Maybe have a couple of different groups for different
stitutations?

Can anyone else (maybe someone friendly) point me in the right direction?

RTFM. The clients have to be installed. It's usually done with
login
script, but can be done manually. Once installed, they update
automatically, they show up in the console, and you can set configuration
options from the central console.

Don't they get automatically added? See I think they're in a server group
already, but it doesn't seem to want to let me manage it. I'll dig into it
again tonight.

Thanks.

SSC, add the clients to a server group then you can customize the clients.

On that same note . . .

I'm evaluating a copy of NAV 7.5 CE (thinking about installing for several
small offices I do computers for).

Maybe I'm dumb as a rock but I can't figure out how to configure the
clients
for this thing. I've got a NAV Server (quararentine & alert
too) installed & I can see the clients on the network, but I can't
configure
anything?!? What tool would one use to configure clients?

a
couple little questions. Thanks in advance.
